When we left the cold landscapes of Denmark and moved to the lush, vibrant Bali, our minds were filled with hopes and apprehensions. Finding the right school for our children was paramount. After visiting several institutions, we settled on Canggu Community School (CCS). Here are five insights, gleaned from our experience, that I hope will help other parents in their quest for the perfect school.

A Broad and Balanced Curriculum
Canggu Community School offers an educational tapestry that weaves together the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. These globally recognized curriculums promise a comprehensive and flexible education. The transition from the Danish system to IGCSE was daunting for my daughter at first, but with patient guidance from her teachers, she soon adapted and flourished. The school’s commitment to high standards is evident in every classroom, making the academic journey both challenging and rewarding.
Core Values That Shape School Culture
Respect, learning, engagement, and balance—these are not just words on a mission statement at Canggu Community School. They are the very pillars that uphold the school’s environment. The respect cultivated here permeates every interaction, from student to teacher, and from parent to administration. This is a community where understanding and mutual respect are paramount. However, the cultural diversity that enriches CCS also brings challenges. Misunderstandings can occur, but the school’s proactive approach in addressing these issues ensures that respect and harmony prevail.
Impressive Facilities and Extracurricular Opportunities
CCS’s facilities are nothing short of impressive. Modern classrooms, state-of-the-art science labs, and extensive sports facilities create a dynamic learning environment. The school’s participation in the Bali Schools Sports Association (BSSA) offers students numerous opportunities to engage in sports like soccer, volleyball, basketball, and swimming. These activities not only promote physical health but also instill teamwork and leadership skills. My son, who has a passion for the arts, initially found the focus on sports overwhelming. However, the school has been expanding its arts programs, allowing him to explore his creative side.
Strong Focus on Student Well-being
At CCS, student well-being is a top priority. The school has implemented various programs to support both the emotional and physical health of students. From counseling services to wellness programs, CCS creates a nurturing environment where students feel valued and safe. They are encouraged to take intellectual risks, knowing they have a safety net of support. However, balancing high academic expectations with mental health needs can be a delicate act. While resources to manage stress are available, continuous dialogue and strategies are essential to maintain this balance.
Feedback and Criticisms
While the general feedback about CCS is positive, there are areas where the school could improve. One of the most commonly mentioned downsides is the high fees. The annual tuition ranges from approximately $6,705 to $15,622, which can be a significant investment for families. This cost includes various fees such as application and registration charges, which can add up quickly.
Many parents, including myself, grapple with justifying this financial outlay. The high fees can create a barrier for some families, making it difficult for them to afford the quality education offered by CCS. Despite the steep costs, many parents, myself included, believe that the quality of education, the comprehensive support system, and the holistic development offered by CCS justify the expense. The school’s robust academic programs, excellent facilities, and focus on student well-being provide a well-rounded educational experience that many parents find worth the investment.
Moreover, some parents have raised concerns about the school’s ability to maintain its values uniformly across its diverse student body. While the school strives to uphold its core values of respect, learning, engagement, and balance, the cultural diversity that enriches CCS can also lead to occasional misunderstandings. The school administration is proactive in addressing these issues, but there is always room for improvement in ensuring that every student feels equally respected and valued.
A Vibrant and Inclusive Community
With nearly 50 nationalities represented, Canggu Community School is a microcosm of the world. This diversity enriches the school’s culture, promoting global citizenship and cultural awareness. Various cultural events and service-learning projects connect students with the wider community, fostering empathy and responsibility. Yet, for new students, integrating into such a diverse environment can be overwhelming. My children took time to adjust to the different cultural dynamics. The school’s orientation programs were invaluable in helping them feel at home, but this area requires ongoing attention to ensure every student feels included and supported.
